what is sustainability

Sustainability involves integrating and balancing social and economic needs within the broader context of maintaining the integrity of ecological systems.  Economic, social and ecological systems are interdependent and must be addressed holistically.  Inter and intra-generational social justice is essential, where the needs of the present are met equitably without compromising the ability of future generations to also meet their needs.  Simultaneously, the intrinsic and instrumental values of Earth’s natural environment must be protected and enhanced.

• grounded in community participation and meaningful engagement,
• committed to exploring progressive environmental issues,
• coordinated with best practice sustainable event management which considers and mitigates potential environmental impacts in the pre-planning process, exemplifies leadership in Greening the Arts and gathers and manages data to track performance over time.

The Floating Land management team values the special ecological sites in which it is situated and also the distinctive and vibrant local community with whom the event is delivered.  The management team is committed to the principles of sustainable event production, improvement and creative sector leadership.

 Floating Land is committed to:

• reducing, recycling, reusing and reconsidering all aspects where possible during the pre-planning, procurement and execution of this event

• implementing energy efficiency strategies and measuring the energy used
• implementing waste minimisation and measuring the amount of waste used
• implementing travel reduction strategies and measuring travel to and from the event
• considering sustainability when selecting the event destination and accommodation
• considering the local or host community and the surrounding environment when selecting the event destination / venue
• protecting the environmental qualities and values of the chosen site/s
• implementing a range of proactive sustainability initiatives at this event
• measuring and reporting publicly on the sustainability performance of the event
