Floating Land invites you to engage, participate and be an active creator in the animation and evolution of Floating Land 2011. The section below outlines workshops and activites that are designed for participation. Some events don't require bookings, however others do. Please select the green 'book here' link to reserve your place. Events without a link do not require booking.



A Little Water Music

10.00am–4.00pm Every day, 28 May to 5 June Main Beach Foreshore

The streets of Boreen Point will tinkle with this wandering piano, waiting for anyone to play.

Deep Ecology Workshop

10.00am–1.00pm Saturday 28 & Monday 30 May Transient workshop, meet at: SITE 3

Trans-disciplinary maestro Ilka Nelson is on a life-long adventure to find ecological tools of connection. During Floating Land Ilka is inviting a small group to join her workshops where themes of water are combined with deep ecology, creativity, cross-species dialogue, site sustainability and intuitive navigation in order to discover relationships between self and place and map the exploration through a range of mediums. Maximum of 15 participants, bookings essential.

Drawing with the Flow

4.00pm–5.00pm Wednesday 1 to Friday 3 June Main Beach Foreshore

Living Water artists lead a twilight drawing workshop accompanied by the piano and A Little Water Music.

GhostNets Community Installation & Workshops 

Lake Cootharaba SITE 9

The GhostNets Australia art project represents an innovative artistic response to a large-scale environmental problem. Due to the prevailing currents in the Gulf of Carpentaria, lost and discarded fishing nets float through the waters, collecting marine life and washing up on beaches. GhostNets artists use this marine debris to create artworks that are not only beautiful, but serve to raise awareness about this problem.

Participation is warmly welcomed; no booking required.

Gubbi Gubbi Workshop

Explore the songs, stories and traditional dance of the region with Lyndon Davis and Gubbi Gubbi Dance one of the most renowned traditional Aboriginal dance troupes in Southeast Queensland. Maximum of 15 participants, bookings essential.

Korean Traditional Dance

10.00am–1.00pm Saturday 28 May Transient workshop, meet at: SITE E

Learn the basics of Korean traditional dance from some of the most accomplished young performers in the field. The refined and fluid energy of traditional Korean dance will be experienced through a deep connection to water, breath and emotion. Maximum of 15 participants, bookings essential.

mauri wai – mauri ora: The Healing Energy of Water (Jo Tito

10.00am–1.00pm Sunday 29 & Monday 30 May Lake Cootharaba SITE 1

This series of workshops creatively weaves together the Boreen Point landscape, kohatu (rock) and wai (water) with the power of digital storytelling. As a meditation on these materials the workshops bring forward a Maori conception of our connections to the environment, and how building our understanding of these kinds of connections might help to bring healing to our planet and peoples. Maximum of 15 participants, bookings essential.

Oceans of Air – DIY Environmental Sensing Workshop 

10.00am–1.00pm Monday 30 & Tuesday 31 May Trails Tent, Lake Cootharaba SITE E

Environmental sensing and data collection allow us to read the world around us in temporal and spatial ranges beyond what we can perceive with our own senses. Led by roboticist Kirsty Boyle and scientist Ramon Guardans, this workshop introduces a range of electronic sensors in an exploration of the atmospheric and aquatic environments of Boreen Point. Maximum of 15 participants, bookings essential.

Permaculture Workshops

9.00am–10.00am Sunday 29 May, Wednesday 1 June & Saturday 4 June Borg Park SITE H

Permaculturist and educator Tim Lang will facilitate discussions and share his knowledge and experience on permaculture, edible landscapes and all things trees and horticulture. Get involved with this dynamic and down-to-earth workshop discussion series, sharing tips on practical know-how regarding sustainable living and integration with the natural world. Under the Surface

Various times & days Lake Cootharaba SITE 6

ArtMakers Noosa, a group of experienced and diverse local artists, will work with the community to create an installation called Under the Surface. The workshop is inspired by images and research about the wild flora and fauna cultures under the sea that keep our Earth in balance. The sculptures will be made from local clays, and fired in mini paper kilns.

Water Creatures Workshop

Led by the Hidden Land Creative Team this workshop explores water stories with found ephemeral materials that will transform into wearable sculptures. Maximum of 15 participants, bookings essential.

Water Culture Sculpture: Interactive Installation

10.00am–11.00am Each Saturday and Sunday (28 & 29 May; 4 & 5 June) Lake Cootharaba SITE 7

Renowned sculptor Steve Weis brings to the lake his latest creation, a water-based acoustic sculpture. His demonstrations will inspire the imagination, with visitors given the chance to experiment.
